Former Book Depository MD launches Best Little Bookshop

UK-based online bookstore Best Little Bookshop, the brainchild of former Book Depository MD Kieron Smith, has launched in beta form, reports the Bookseller. Smith announced plans to create the bookstore in February 2014 after leaving the Book Depository in November 2013. The store currently offers books to 100 countries in five different languages, with purchases available in 19 currencies. Smith said the ‘boutique’ online bookstore aims to recreate the pleasure of the physical bookstore by offering personal recommendations from staff members ‘rather than being driven by algorithms to create book lists’. An option for international booksellers and publishers to sell titles direct to consumers through the website will be introduced in a few weeks time to increase the range of books on offer. Books are being sold between full price and a 37% discount, with prices inclusive of postage. ‘We are price competitive, but we don’t want to drive the value out of the product at the same time—we don’t want to encourage a race to the bottom,’ said Smith.
