Gordon Burn Prize shortlist announced

In the UK, the shortlist for the Gordon Burn Prize has been announced, reports the Bookseller. The shortlisted titles are: The Wake (Paul Kingsnorth, Unbound), which is also longlisted for this year’s Man Booker Prize; The Valley (Richard Benson, Bloomsbury); The Kills (Richard House, Picador); The Trip to Echo Spring (Olivia Laing, Canongate); The Free (Willy Vlautin, Faber); and American Interior (Gruff Rhys, Hamish Hamilton). The Gordon Burn Prize celebrates writers whose works follows in the ‘fearless footsteps’ of the late English writer Gordon Burn, described by award organisers as a ‘literary polymath, writing forensically on subjects ranging from celebrity to serial killers, politics to contemporary art, sport to the media’. The award is run in collaboration with the Gordon Burn Trust, New Writing North and Faber & Faber. The winner will be announced on 10 October and will receive £5000 (A$8970) and the opportunity to take up a writing retreat at Gordon Burn’s cottage in Berwickshire, UK.
