Magabala Books Indigenous Creators Scholarships recipients announced

Magabala has announced the recipients for its Magabala Books’ Indigenous Creators Scholarships for 2014.

The recipients are:

  • Reggie Sultan from Darwin, who will use the funding to attend an illustrator’s workshop
  • Tori-Jay Mordey, a Queensland illustrator who will buy multimedia equipment
  • Maureen Nampijimpa O’Keefe, an author and artist from Alice Springs, who will receive mentoring and travel assistance
  • Broome-based artist Samuel Stream, originally from Marble Bar, who will use his scholarship to attend a workshop in Perth and buy art materials.

Magabala’s philanthropy manager Sharon Griffiths said Magabala received eight applications for the scholarships. ‘Interestingly, seven applications came from remote or regional areas, where it is often difficult to get professional development opportunities as an author or illustrator,’ she said.

The Indigenous Creators Scholarship program is funded through private donations. This is the second round of scholarships.

Thanking the donors, Magabala Books board member Julie Cobb said the scholarships helped ‘to build the growing body of Indigenous literature and to spread the seeds of our culture’.
