Vic Prem’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing 2014 shortlist announced

The titles shortlisted for the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing have been announced.

The shortlisted titles are:

  • The Promise (Tony Birch, UQP)
  • Mogwie Idan: Stories of the Land (Lionel George Fogarty, Vagabond Press)
  • Mullumbimby (Melissa Lucashenko, UQP)
  • Dark Emu (Bruce Pascoe, Magabala Books)
  • Calypso Summer (Jared Thomas, Magabala Books)
  • The Swan Book (Alexis Wright, Giramondo).

This year the judging panel increased the traditional shortlist of three books to six, ‘a reflection of the high calibre of this year’s entries’.

‘The shortlist for the Award for Indigenous Writing is diverse and showcases the vibrancy and talent of these six writers,’ said Victoria’s Minister for the Arts Heidi Victoria. ‘Their outstanding work spans fiction and nonfiction, and includes short stories and a collection of poetry. I congratulate all the writers on their remarkable achievements.’

The winner of the biennial $20,000 award will be announced at the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne on Indigenous Literacy Day on 3 September.
