HarperCollins introduces watermarking for ebooks

In the US, HarperCollins is using watermarking technology to increase the security of its ebooks, reports Publishers Weekly. According to chief digital officer Chantal Restivo-Alessi, HarperCollins has adopted Digimarc’s Guardian Watermarking for Publishing product to make sure etailers ‘are using the highest degree of security possible’. If the product finds ebooks that are being downloaded illegally, the publisher will ask the etailer to upgrade their security or risk losing their account, said Restivo-Alessi. The watermarking technology is being used in addition to digital rights management (DRM).
