Readfy launches advertisement-supported ebook service

In Germany, Readfy has launched its advertisement-supported ebook service with a catalogue of 25,000 titles that can be read within smartphone apps for free, reports the Digital Reader. Unlike Scribd and Kindle Unlimited, which charge users a subscription fee to read ebooks, Readfy sells advertisements to subsidise a free reading experience and inserts the advertisements into ebooks. While reading ebooks, users will see banners on the upper edge of the screen, as well as advertisements between chapters that may be changed to auto-playing video advertisements in the future. The catalogue is mostly made up of titles published by German trade publishers and also includes 6000 titles by self-publishers. The Readfy service launched with finance obtained from a crowdfunding campaign which raised €500,000 (A$722,000) from 1363 investors. View the Readfy website here.
