Goldsmiths Prize 2014 shortlist announced

In the UK, the shortlist for the 2014 Goldsmiths Prize has been announced. The shortlisted titles are J (Howard Jacobson, Jonathan Cape), How to be Both (Ali Smith, Hamish Hamilton), The Wake (Paul Kingsnorth, Unbound), Outline (Rachel Cusk, Faber), The Absent Therapist (Will Eaves, CB Editions) and In the Light of What We Know (Zia Haider Rahman, Picador). This is the second year the prize is being run after launching in 2013 to recognise fiction from the UK and Ireland that ‘breaks the mould and opens up new possibilities for the novel form’. ‘We’re delighted to have ended up with a shortlist that captures so much of the versatility with which the novel, these days, is being stretched, knotted, rejigged, re-invented,’ said chair of judges Francis Spufford. The winner of the £10,000 (A$18,515) prize will be announced on 12 November. Last year’s winner was A Girl is a Half-formed Thing by Eimear McBride (Text).
