Malala awarded 2014 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Pakistani activist and author Malala Yousafzai and Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi ‘for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education’. Yousafzai, the youngest person to be presented with the Peace Prize, is the author of the bestselling memoir I am Malala (Weidenfeld & Nicolson), which details her fight for girls’ education and her near-fatal shooting by the Taliban. A younger readers edition of the book has also been published. The Nobel committee said: ‘Despite her youth, Malala Yousafzay has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education, and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations. This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls’ rights to education.’
