International Publishers Association (IPA) appointments

Bloomsbury executive director Richard Charkin has been elected president of the International Publishers Association (IPA) after serving as vice-president since 2013. Charkin will take over from current president Youngsuk ‘Y S’ Chi when his four-year term ends in January 2015. Michiel Kolman of Elsevier has been elected vice-president. Commenting on his appointment, Charkin said: ‘There has never been a time when there have been more issues affecting publishing—new business models, new threats to copyright, new challenges to freedom of expression, new and hugely powerful industry forces, greater than ever need for education—and there has never been a time of more opportunity to publish well in science, in culture, in education and in literature.’
