MidnightSun crowdfunds first children’s book

Adelaide-based publisher MidnightSun will publish its first children’s book in February 2015 following a successful crowdfunding campaign.

One Step at a Time, written by Jane Jolly and illustrated by Sally Heinrich, is ‘a story about a boy, a baby elephant and a landmine’, publishing director Anna Solding told Books+Publishing.

‘When Jane Jolly and Sally Heinrich approached us with the project, we were overjoyed to take it on. Because a children’s picture book requires much more capital investment than the three adult fiction books we have previously published, we decided to crowdfund for One Step at a Time, which we did with Pozible in May 2014. With plenty of time to spare we reached our $10,000 target, and beyond.’

Solding said Australian Standing Orders had put in an order for ‘almost 3000 copies for school libraries, which was very exciting’.

‘If this book can reach out to children across Australia and engage them in conversations about landmines, friendship, courage and hope, we would be delighted.’
