In the US, Hachette (HBG) has agreed to buy independent publisher Black Dog & Leventhal (BD&L), reports Publishers Weekly. Black Dog & Leventhal, which specialises in ‘creative’ nonfiction and illustrated titles, and has a backlist of around 250 titles, will become an imprint of Hachette, with founder J P Leventhal to continue as publisher. Hachette CEO Michael Pietsch said: ‘The addition of the BD&L publishing program will enhance our nonfiction and backlist portfolios, important areas of focus for HBG, and will expand our strength in specialty retail stores and museum shops.’ The deal is set to close in the next few months.
