‘The Miniaturist’ wins Waterstones Book of the Year

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton (Picador) has been named as the Waterstones Book of the Year. Burton’s novel was chosen from a shortlist of eight that included Richard Flanagan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Vintage). Waterstones managing director James Daunt described The Minaturist, which is set in 17th-century Amsterdam, as ‘a first novel of vivid excitement’ that ‘fired the imagination of our booksellers and their customers’. Burton said that winning the award was ‘particularly special’ as both the shortlist and winner were chosen by a panel of booksellers. Waterstones is now selling an exclusive edition of the book.
