UK print book sales fall by more than £150m in five years
In the UK, new Nielsen BookScan figures reveal that sales of print books have fallen by more than £150m (A$278.53m) since 2009, reports the Guardian. An analysis of last year’s figures showed that while the decline in sales slowed in 2014 thanks to strong children’s book sales, adult fiction sales were down 5.3% from the previous year to £321.3m (A$596.59m). Hardback fiction sales fell even further, down 11.6% from the previous year to £67.9m (A$126.1m), with only three titles selling more than 100,000 copies in 2014. Adult nonfiction sales were down 4% to £585.7m (A$1087.7m). Nielsen research director Andre Breedt said that the data suggests the ‘decline in fiction is really more migration to ebooks rather than real decline’.
