National Readathon Day to debut in the US
In the US, the first National Readathon Day will take place on Saturday 24 January. The event, which is sponsored by the National Book Foundation, Penguin Random House, GoodReads and Mashable, asks readers to pledge to read for four hours starting from midday, with events planned at bookstores, libraries, schools and other organisations around the country. The event has already raised more than US$25,000 (A$30,605), with proceeds going to the National Book Foundation’s education programs. Organisers have released a promotional video with 15 authors discussing why reading is important (‘If you don’t make time to read, your brain will rot,’ says Delia Ephron) and what they like to read.
