Tesco to close blinkbox Books

UK supermarket chain Tesco will close its ebook platform blinkbox Books at the end of February after failing to reach an agreement to sell the platform to Waterstones, reports the Bookseller. Around 60 staff working on the platform are likely to be made redundant. ‘We believe that we can do more for our customers by focusing on our core business,’ said a Tesco spokesperson. ‘Our focus now is on the colleagues affected and our customers.’ As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Tesco began selling ebooks via the blinkbox digital entertainment platform in March 2014. Blinkbox Books was a rebranded version of the Mobcast ebook platform, which was acquired by Tesco in September 2012. Tesco also offers film and television streaming via the blinkbox platform, which it acquired in 2011.
