Amazon reports net loss of US$241 million in 2014

Amazon has released fourth-quarter and full-year figures, reports Publishers Weekly. For the full year, the online retailer’s sales increased 20% to US$88.99 billion (A$1.14 billion), but operating income was only US$178 million (A$230 million), compared with an operating income of US$745 million (A$961 million) in 2013. The net loss for the year was US$241 million (A$311 million), compared with net income of US$274 million (A$353 million) in 2013. Amazon’s ‘media’ group, home to books and ebooks among other products, saw sales rise 3.6% to US$22.5 billion (A$29 billion). ‘Media’ saw an increase of 7% in North America for the year but was almost flat internationally at US$10.9 billion (A$14 billion). Revenue in the ‘electronics and other merchandise’ segment rose 25% to US$60.9 billion (A$78.6 million).
