Roy Morgan study finds more Australians buying ebooks

More Australians are buying ebooks according to a study from Roy Morgan Research.

The study found that over the past two years, online sales of ebooks have increased across most age groups. The study claims that in 2014, 7.0% of Australians aged 14 years and over bought at least one ebook online over an average three months, increasing from 6.6% in 2013.

The greatest increases were found in the age group of 18-24 year olds, where the number of respondents buying ebooks rose from 3.9% in 2013 to 5.1% in 2014, and for respondents aged 65 years old and over with an increase from 4.1% to 5.4%. The age group of 35-39 year olds claimed the biggest percentage of ebook buyers with 9.1% in 2014. Two age groups showed a slight decrease, with ebook buyers under 18 years old showing a decrease from 1.9% in 2013 to 1.8% in 2014 and those aged 50-64 years old showing a decrease from 7.7% to 7.5%.

The study also found that the proportion of Australians reading books (fiction or nonfiction, print or digital) increased overall over the two years.

The Roy Morgan study included over 19,500 respondents between October 2012 and September 2013 and over 16,000 people between October 2013 and September 2014.
