NGV to host inaugural Melbourne Art Book Fair in May

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will host the inaugural Melbourne Art Book Fair on 1-3 May.

Local and international book designers and publishers will exhibit fine art, architecture and design titles in the NGV’s Great Hall. Confirmed exhibitors include New York City bookshop and publisher Printed Matter, Melbourne publisher Surpluss, Castlemaine publisher 3ply, Sydney publisher and design studio Rainoff Books and Melbourne print studio Dawn Press.

The fair will also run free public talks, book signings, performances and a symposium on the future of book design and publishing, alongside an International Symposium on the Art of Independent Publishing run by the RMIT Design Futures Lab.

NGV director Tony Ellwood said in a statement, ‘This inaugural event will lay the foundations for a continued forum around art books and bring together the most influential publishers both locally and internationally. We are delighted to host Printed Matter from the USA for our first event and provide a vital link between Melbourne and other international book fairs and publishers.’

The fair launches with a ticketed preview event on 1 March. The fair is free to the public from 2-3 May. Supporters include The Trust Company Australia Foundation and the Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature Office. ’
