UK indie bookshop numbers fall in 2014
The number of independent bookshops in the UK fell in 2014 with almost 50 bookshops closing, reports the Bookseller. The Booksellers Association lost 48 members in 2014, down from 987 members in 2013 to 939 last year. Factors contributing to indie bookshop closures include rising business rates, competition from online booksellers, ebooks, greater competition in the entertainment marketplace, weaker consumer spending and lacklustre high streets. This is the eighth consecutive year that the number of indie bookstores in the UK has fallen. In 2013, the number fell below 1000 for the first time since records began.
