Lish wins 2015 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction

In the US, Atticus Lish has won the 2015 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for his debut novel Preparation for the Next Life (Oneworld), reports the Washington Post. Lish’s novel was selected from a shortlist of five for the US$15,000 (A$19,634) prize, which recognises the best work of fiction by an American author published in the preceding year. The judges said Preparation for the Next Life, which explores the relationship between an Iraq War veteran and a Chinese Muslim immigrant in New York, ‘scours and illuminates the vast, traumatized America that lives, works and loves outside the castle gates’. The PEN/Faulkner Award is ‘known for its critical independence and its willingness to consider books by small publishers’. Read more about the award here.
