Canadian book sales steady in 2014

In Canada, the volume of print book sales has remained steady in 2014 compared to the previous year, while the value of sales has dropped slightly, reports Publishers Weekly. A report by non-profit organisation BookNet Canada, which tracks 85% of print book sales in Canada’s English-language market, recorded unit sales of 52 million in 2014, at a total value of C$934m (A$976m), down C$16m (A$16.7m) from the previous year. Adult trade sales were down 3.5% compared to 2013 and children’s trade sales were up 4.1%, making up 37% of overall print book sales. Historical fiction sales increased by 42.6%, science books increased by 30.2% and mystery and detective books increased by 11.1%. The most popular books overall were Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn, Hachette) and The Fault in Our Stars (John Green, Penguin). The bestselling nonfiction book was Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes (Pan Macmillan).
