Little Gnome bookshop to open in Brisbane

A new bookstore, Little Gnome, will open in the Brisbane suburb of Wynnum on 30 May.

Belinda Ellis, who will run the store with her son Jack Le Roux, told Books+Publishing the ‘small, hole in the wall’ bookshop will specialise in Australian self-published authors, as well as stocking a selection of art, travel, philosophy, fiction, YA and children’s books.

The store will also include a coffee shop and function as a ‘meeting place’, said Ellis. ‘In the evening, Little Gnome will be a meeting place for our book club, writing and music workshops and debate nights. We want to bring back the art of conversation and will have “conversation” starter cards and board games ready for people to play and strangers to meet.’

Ellis said she decided to focus on self-published authors after working with local unsigned bands. ‘When we decided to open the coffee shop we were originally going to put in CDs, vinyl etc, but our mutual love of books led us down this path instead,’ said Ellis. ‘It’s a great challenge for me, to start from scratch with local authors, where I started with local musicians over eight years ago.’

Little Gnome will open at 5/60 Florence Street in Wynnum. For more information, visit the Little Gnome Facebook page here.
