Dymocks’ flagship Perth store to close

Dymocks’ flagship store in Perth will close its doors on Sunday 14 June.

‘It is with deep sorrow that after almost 25 years we have to announce that we’re closing,’ said Dymocks Hay Street on its Facebook page. ‘Last day will be the 14th of June so we hope that we will see you before then for a last hurrah (and 40% off).’

Dymocks managing director Steve Cox told Books+Publishing the Hay Street store was closing as its lease was coming to an end, and that Dymocks was currently looking for another location in the CBD.

Cox said Dymocks was ‘very committed to the CBD’. ‘The WA market has been very good for us, the store has performed well and sales are up across WA. We absolutely want to continue having a flagship store,’ said Cox.

Dymocks Hay Street is Western Australia’s biggest bookstore. Its closest competition is Boffins Bookshop, which moved from Hay Street to William Street in April 2014 and expanded its range to include trade fiction and children’s books.

Boffins co-owner Bill Liddelow told the ABC that he was ‘very, very sad that Dymocks in the CBD is closing’. ‘Of course we competed in some ways but we also complemented each other. It’s always been wonderful to have two really good destination bookshops in the city,’ he said.
