BWF releases 2015 schools program

Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) has released its 2015 Word Play program, designed for students from prep to year 12.

The program, which runs from 2-4 September, features sessions with international guests US authors Cassandra Clare and Holly Black, and Icelandic author and lyricist Sjón.

Australian authors and illustrators in the program include John Marsden, Andy Griffiths, Anita Heiss, Brenton McKenna, Anna Branford, Jane Caro, Marc Martin, Alice Pung, Nick Earls, David Burton, Emily Rodda, R A Spratt, Christine Bongers, Deb Fitzpatrick, Elizabeth Farrelly and Briony Stewart.

Some of the highlights from the 2015 program are: a session on comic design with Brenton McKenna, author of Ubby’s Underdogs (Magabala Books); a workshop with picture book illustrator Marc Martin; and a guided tour of the University of Queensland’s ‘Light Play’ exhibition alongside festival guests Sjón, Pascalle Burton and Nathan Shepherdson, followed by a workshop with poet Andy Jackson.

Word Play will also run a free program for children and teenagers alongside its schools program. The free special events being run this year are: ‘Alphabet Zoo’, an ‘arts and crafts play-scape’ that explores Mem Fox’s world of Possum Magic (Omnibus), held at the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) from 2-6 September; and ‘Love YA!’, which ‘brings together fans, readers and writers of YA fiction’ for a one-day event that runs from 12-5pm on 5 September.

This year’s schools program will be held at venues at the SLQ, University of Queensland and online. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the BWF website here.
