Te Papa Press to continue publishing during museum’s redevelopment

Te Papa Museum in Wellington, New Zealand, has announced Te Papa Press will continue publishing books during the museum’s redevelopment.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, museum management announced in April that it would review the press and was proposing to suspend publishing for five years. Four positions at the press would have been lost under the move.

In a statement, museum CEO Rick Ellis said that in the next five years Te Papa’s long-term exhibits will be renewed, requiring a ‘huge input of research and curatorial expertise’. ‘After considering all our options, and the feedback from our staff and the public, we believe we can continue publishing books while we renew the museum,’ said Ellis.

Ellis said that all current staff will be retained and that the museum will look for partnership opportunities for the press in the coming months.
