Landman, Grill win Carnegie, Greenaway medals

In the UK, Tanya Landman has won the Carnegie Medal for Buffalo Soldier (Walker Books) and debut author and illustrator Will Grill has won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Shackleton’s Journey (Flying Eye Books). Landman and Grill will receive £500 (A$1024) worth of books to donate to their local library, and Grill will also receive a £5000 (A$10,240) cash prize. Both winning titles were drawn from ‘real-life historical adventures’; Buffalo Soldier was ‘inspired by the true story of former slave Cathy Williams, who was the only known African-American woman to  enlist  in  the  US  army,  under  the  guise  of  a  man’; and Shackleton’s Journey is a nonfictional account of the explorer’s crossing of Antarctica. Both titles were chosen from a shortlist of eight. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Shaun Tan was also shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal for Rules of Summer (Lothian). The Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medals are awarded annually to authors and illustrators, and are presented by the UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
