New ‘Books+Publishing’ reviews out now

Books+Publishing’s latest Reviews newsletter contains 13 reviews of books publishing in August and September.

Included is a five-star review of Fever of Animals by Miles Allinson (Scribe, September), winner of the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. Reviewer Veronica Sullivan describes it as an ‘unsettling and deeply impressive debut’.

Alecia Simmonds’ Wild Man (Affirm Press, September), about a coronial inquest into the police shooting of a mentally ill man, also scored highly. ‘Simmonds structures this book as a personal fact-finding mission, critiquing her assumptions in a self-reflexive, honest style similar to that of Helen Garner in This House of Grief,’ writes reviewer Cosima McGrath.

Also reviewed are A Crucible of Souls (Mitchell Hogan, HarperVoyager, September), The Landing (Susan Johnson, A&U, September), Locust Girl (Merlinda Bobis, Spinifex Press, August), Please Don’t Leave Me Here (Tania Chandler, Scribe, August), The Promise Seed (Cass Moriarty, UQP, September), Resurrection Bay (Emma Viskic, Echo Publishing, September), Rush Oh! (Shirley Barrett, Picador, September), Flesh Wounds (Richard Glover, ABC Books, September), The Knowledge Wars (Peter Doherty, MUP, September), Under Cover (Craig Munro, Scribe, September) and Warrior Elite (Robert Macklin, Hachette, September).
