Malala Yousafzai launches #BooksNotBullets campaign
Nobel laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai, author of I Am Malala (Weidenfeld & Nicolson), has launched the #BooksNotBullets campaign on social media to pressure world leaders to invest in education rather than the military. In a report published by the Malala Fund, Yousafzai asks low- and middle-income countries to commit a minimum of 20% of national budgets on education, rather than the current average of 15%. As part of the campaign, Yousafzai is also asking supporters to post a photo of themselves holding a book on Yousafzai’s 18th birthday on 12 July: ‘Post a photo of yourself holding up your favourite book and share why YOU choose #BooksNotBullets—and tell world leaders to fund the real weapon for change, education!’ she writes.
