US audiobook sales up 13.5% in 2014

In the US, audiobook sales have increased by 13.5% from 2013 to 2014 according to the Audio Publishers Association’s (APA) annual sales survey, reports Library Journal. According to the survey, 25,787 audiobook titles were published in 2014, up from 24,755 titles in 2013, with total sales of more than US$1.47bn (A$2.02bn). While adult titles accounted for the majority of sales (87%), children’s and YA titles grew over the period by 3.7%.The APA has attributed the overall growth in audiobooks to the increasing popularity of digital downloads (up 7.3%), as well as a greater awareness of audiobooks. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, sales of audiobooks in the UK have more than doubled over five years according to figures released by the Publishers Association (PA).
