UK survey finds only 1% illegally download ebooks

A survey by the UK government has found only 1% of internet users aged 12 and over illegally downloaded at least one ebook between March and May 2015, reports the Guardian. The Intellectual Property Office’s report found the publishing sector has the lowest level of illegal downloads in the entertainment industry, with 9% accessing music illegally, 7% television, 6% films and 2% computer software and video games. The survey found that 69% of ebook consumers paid for some content, and 47% for all of their content, which is more than consumers of any other content type. Publishers Association CEO Richard Mollet said the study shows readers prefer a legal service over illegal ones because of the ‘convenience and availability’ of ebooks, but added: ‘Publishers do have to continue to work extremely hard to ensure illegal activity does not deprive authors of their due rewards.’
