Japanese readers spend the most on ebooks

Japanese ebook users are spending the highest average amount of money on ebooks, according to a report released by online statistics portal Statista. Japanese ebook users will spend an estimated average of US$104.55(A$141.77) on ebooks in 2015, followed by UK ebook users, who will spend an estimated average of US$102.09 (A$138.44). US ebook users’ estimated average is US$55.66 (A$75.48), although the report also shows the US leads the world in total ebook revenue with US$4.96bn (A$6.72bn). According to GoodEreader, Japan’s high placement is due to the country’s practice of classifying digital manga sales, which account for 80% of the Japanese digital market, as ebook sales.
