Inaugural Australian Sports Book of the Year award longlist announced

The longlist for the inaugural Australian Sports Book of the Year award has been announced.

The 12 longlisted titles are:

  • Roy Higgins (Patrick Bartley, Penguin)
  • Eddie: The Rise and Rise of Eddie McGuire (Michael Bodey, Hachette)
  • Whitewash to Whitewash (Daniel Brettig, Penguin)
  • Time and Space (James Coventry, ABC Books)
  • Pushing the Limits (Kurt Fearnley & Warwick Green, Penguin)
  • The Short Long Book (Martin Flanagan, Random House)
  • Sonny Ball (Paul Kent, Macmillan)
  • The Straight Dope (Chip Le Grand, MUP)
  • The Draftees (Emma Quayle, Penguin)
  • A-League: The Inside Story of the Tumultuous First Decade (John Stensholt & Shaun Mooney, Nero)
  • Aussie Grit (Mark Webber, Macmillan)
  • Dangerous Games (Larry Writer, A&U).

 

The longlist was chosen from 23 entries. A shortlist will be announced on 13 October. The winning author receives $20,000 and the shortlisted authors each receive $1000. Judges include Jacquelin Magnay, Charlie Happell, Ben Ikin,  Gerard Whateley and Robert Craddock.

The award is being run by sports and racing bookmaker William Hill, which introduced the prize in Australia after Anna Krien won the UK Sports Book of the Year award in 2014 for Night Games (Black Inc.).
