New NZ bookstore to stock only small press titles

A new bookstore in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, will exclusively stock small press titles, including print-on-demand and some self-published books, to showcase local authors, reports

Writer’s Plot, Readers Read, which opens on 2 October, won’t feature any titles from the major publishers, and will only sell fiction and poetry books by New Zealand authors.

Cat Connor, who cofounded the store with fellow author Caro Lankow, told it was hard for authors to be picked up by big publishers in New Zealand. ‘You can clock up hundreds of rejections as a New Zealand author,’ said Connor. ‘Often that’s not even because something is bad, it’s just not what they’re interested in.’

Connor said they hoped the new bookshop would help to dispel some of the myths about New Zealand fiction. ‘New Zealand authors are actually really really good,’ said Connor. ‘We want to help share their stories.’
