UK booksellers predict Christmas bestsellers on ‘Super Thursday’

In the UK, booksellers have nominated books by Jonathan Bate, Jamie Oliver, David Walliams and Zoe Sugg as the most likely Christmas bestsellers, reports the Bookseller. An industry-wide ‘Books Are My Bag’ promotion coincided with ‘Super Thursday’ on 8 October, which marks the day on which the greatest number of hardback titles are released in the UK. The Bookseller asked nine retailers to name the titles they predict will be Christmas bestsellers. The most-mentioned titles were: Jamie Oliver’s Everyday Super Food (Michael Joseph); David Walliams’ Grandpa’s Great Escape (HarperCollins); Zoe ‘Zoella’ Sugg’s Girl Online: On Tour (Puffin); and Ted Hughes by Jonathan Bate (Flamingo). The Bookseller also reported the Christmas sales period will follow ‘the strongest autumn [in publication terms] in years’, and noted that retailers are reporting ‘especially fierce’ competition in the children’s and cookery categories, with Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Nigel Slater all publishing new books in the latter. Six out of the nine retailers surveyed said Bill Bryson’s The Road to Little Dribbling (Doubleday) would also be popular among customers.
