Houghton wins 2015 Five Mile Press Illustrator Prize

Suzanne Houghton has won the second annual Five Mile Press Illustrator Prize and a $4000 contract with the publisher.

Acting managing director Kay Scarlett said in a statement that Houghton’s entry stood out for ‘the inherent humour and characterisation in her drawings’. ‘We could all see how readily it would translate into a picture book and appeal to an international audience,’ said Scarlett.

Houghton’s entry was chosen from a shortlist of five. Scarlett said the publisher ‘could happily work with the other shortlisted illustrators in the future’. ‘We would certainly like to keep those illustrators in mind for upcoming projects and also encourage those who entered to try another year,’ said Scarlett.

The winner of the inaugural prize was Lucinda Gifford. Her book Arthur and the Curiosity will be published by the Five Mile Press in early 2016.
