Alexis wins 2015 Scotiabank Giller Prize

In Canada, André Alexis has won the C$100,000 (A$106,800) Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel Fifteen Dogs (Serpent’s Tail). The judges described Alexis’ novel as ‘an insightful and philosophical meditation on the nature of consciousness … filled with balancing acts: humour juxtaposed with savagery, solitude with the desperate need to be part of a pack, perceptive prose interspersed with playful poetry’. The winning author receives national exposure via a live CBC television broadcast of the awards ceremony, and the prize announcement typically results in an increase in book sales of more than 500%. The winning novel was chosen from a shortlist of five, which also included Arvida (Samuel Archibald, Biblioasis), Outline (Rachel Cusk, Vintage), Daydreams of Angels (Heather O’Neill, Quercus) and Martin John (Anakana Schofield, Biblioasis). Each of the shortlisted authors receives C$10,000 (A$10,680). For more information about the prize, click here.
