Amazon to open second bookstore in San Diego

In the US, Amazon will open its second bricks-and-mortar bookstore in San Diego, California in mid-2016, reports Publisher’s Weekly. The San Diego store will be located in an ‘upscale mall’ near the University of California San Diego campus, which follows the model set up by Amazon’s first bookstore in Seattle, which is located in an outdoor mall across the street from the University of Washington. Amazon spokesperson Sarah Gelman said in a statement: ‘We are excited to be bringing Amazon Books to the University Towne Center Mall in San Diego and we are currently hiring store managers and associates.’ As previously reported by Books+Publishing, mall operator GGP CEO Sandeep Mathrani said that Amazon plans to open ‘300 to 400 bookstores’. An anonymous source at the New York Times also reported that Amazon’s bricks-and-mortar plans were underway, but said they were more ‘modest’ than those suggested by Mathrani.
