Orwell Prize 2016 shortlists announced

In the UK, the shortlists for the 2016 Orwell Prize for political writing have been announced. In the running for the £3000 (A$5547) book prize are: The New Threat from Islamic Militancy (Jason Burke, Bodley Head); Other People’s Money (John Kay, Profile Books); The Tears of the Rajas (Ferdinand Mount, S&S); The Invention of Russia (Arkady Ostrovsky, Atlantic Books); The Unravelling (Emma Sky, Atlantic Books); and Circling the Square (Wendell Steavenson, Granta Books). The annual awards are presented to works that comes closest to George Orwell’s ambition ‘to make political writing into an art’. The Guardian reports that this year’s shortlist is ‘dominated by the Middle East, from a guide to Islamic militancy to an exploration of the Egyptian revolution’.
