Carey elected to American Academy of Arts and Letters

Peter Carey has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Carey, who is based in the US and has dual Australian-US citizenship, is just the second Australian-born author to join the academy, after Shirley Hazzard.

Carey told SMH he ‘had a foreigner’s pleasure in being accepted’. ‘I live with the daily social knowledge that these writers are my peers, but I have an equal and opposite sense that I belong to an alien race whose passions and experience are, of course, not American,’ said Carey.

Carey was one of 12 new members inducted in May.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters aims to ‘foster, assist, and sustain excellence’ in American literature, music and art. Only 250 living artists are members at any time.
