Te Papa Press, Massey University Press announce partnership

New Zealand publisher Te Papa Press has formed a partnership with Massey University Press, which will see the publishers work together to produce books under two separate eponymous imprints.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, in April last year Te Papa museum management proposed suspending Te Papa Press’ publishing operations for five years during the museum’s redevelopment. In June last year museum CEO Rick Ellis said management had decided to continue publishing books, and would start looking for partnership opportunities for the press.

Under the agreement, Massey University Press will provide the publishing infrastructure and current Massey publisher Nicola Legat will hold the position for both imprints. Te Papa in-house senior editor Catherine Cradwick will also be retained.

Legat told Booksellers NZ that Massey and Te Papa presses ‘are separate entities, and they will each publish under their own imprints, with the drivers of their lists remaining specific and particular to each of them’.

‘Massey University Press’ mission is to take the outstanding research being done across the university and to make books that explore, explain and engage around that research,’ said Legat. ‘Te Papa Press’ mission is not dissimilar: to shed light on the vast and significant collections of our national museum, to help New Zealanders know and understand more about this country and ourselves, and to showcase the research of the museum’s highly skilled curatorial team.’
