S&S India to publish local titles

Simon & Schuster’s (S&S) Indian division, S&S India, will launch its own local publishing program in 2017, reports Publishers Weekly. Launched in 2011, S&S India currently markets titles from the publisher’s other international divisions into the country, but with the appointment of former Rupa Publications acquisitions editor Dharini Bhaskar to the role of editorial director, S&S India will begin publishing fiction and nonfiction English-language works from local authors. S&S UK and International chief executive and publisher Ian Chapman said the expansion was due to the ‘steady growth’ of the division and the success of other international units branching into local publishing. ‘This is an exciting strategic move that will build on [S&S India’s] success: our international territories are performing strongly with their local publishing and we are confident that [S&S India] will continue that trend,’ said Chapman.
