McWatters wins €3000 ‘Moth’ short story prize

Australian author Nikki McWatters has won the €3000 (A$4400) Moth Short Story Prize for her story ‘Yellow Belly’.

The Irish award is open to all international writers regardless of their publishing history. Judge and author John Boyne said McWatters’ story was chosen ‘for its careful juxtaposition of childhood innocence with the darker sides of family life’.

The story will appear in the autumn issue of the Irish arts and literature magazine the Moth. McWatters’ third book, the YA novel Hexenhaus, will be published by UQP in November.
