Inaugural Excellence in Translation medal shortlist announced

The shortlist for the inaugural Medal for Excellence in Translation, administered by the Australian Academy of the Humanities, has been announced.

The shortlisted translators and their works are:

• John Minford, for I Ching (Yijing): The Book of Change (Viking)
• Stuart Robson, for The Old Javanese Rāmāyana: A New English Translation with an Introduction and Notes (Institute for the Study of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa)
• Phoebe Weston-Evans, for Paris Nocturne (Patrick Modiano, Text)

The judging panel also noted the success of Text in acquiring the rights to Paris Nocturne (originally Accident nocturne) and another of Modiano’s novels, La Petite Bijou, writing that it is ‘an important coup for Australian publishing and translation’.

The biennial medal is awarded for an outstanding translation into English of a work of any genre, from any language or period, by an Australian translator.

The winner of the 2016 AAH Medal for Excellence in Translation will be announced on 26 October, and will be presented with their medal at an Academy ceremony in Melbourne on 18 November 2016.
