Affirm mentorship award winners announced

Affirm Press has announced the winners of its second Affirm Mentorship Award, run in partnership with Varuna, the Writers’ House.

The writers and their projects are:

  • Angela J Williams, for her creative nonfiction-memoir Snakes and Ladders: A memoir of the prison game
  • Stephen Gray, for his literary fiction novel The Family Plot
  • Sonia Orchard, for her adult literary fiction About the Fire

The award received 109 manuscripts, with the Affirm editorial team making their decision ‘partly based on the strength of the writing, and partly on their potential as trade books’, as well as their suitability for Affirm’s list.

The recipients will undertake a one-week residency at Varuna, with the opportunity to work with editors Ruby Ashby-Orr and Kate Goldsworthy.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Affirm acquired the rights to Paula Keogh’s memoir The Green Bell after Keogh was one of the three winners of its inaugural award last year.
