Whitehead, Desmond win 2017 ALA Andrew Carnegie Medals

The American Library Association (ALA) has announced the winners of the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medals. The fiction prize was awarded to Colson Whitehead for The Underground Railroad (Orbit) and the nonfiction prize went to Matthew Desmond for Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City (Allen Lane).

The winning authors each receive US$5000 (A$6614), with two other finalists in each category receiving US$1500 (A$1984). The winners were chosen by a panel of library professionals from across the US and announced at the ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta on 22 January.
