Fair Work Commission announces cuts to Sunday, holiday rates for workers

Retail, hospitality and fast-food industry workers will have their Sunday and public holiday penalty rates reduced, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) has ruled.

Full and part-time retail workers’ Sunday rates will be cut from 200% loading to 150%, while casual workers’ rates will be cut from 200% to 175%.

Full and part-time retail workers’ holiday rates will be cut from 250% loading to 225%.

The FWC said the new holiday rates will be effective from 1 July and a staggered rollout of the new Sunday rates from the same date.

Federal Labor party leader Bill Shorten has said his party will introduce legislation to parliament to block the FWC’s proposed changes, while prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has stated the Coalition will support the decision made by the commission.

A summary of the decision can be read here.
