Shakespeare and Company named Bookstore of the Year

France’s Shakespeare and Company has been named Bookstore of the Year at the London Book Fair (LBF) International Excellence Awards.

Shakespeare and Company is the second bookstore to win the award, after Readings in Melbourne took out the inaugural prize last year. Also in the running this year were Time Out Bookstore from Auckland and Exclusive Books from South Africa.

Shakespeare and Company was praised for ‘the way it has endeavoured to become a 21st century bookseller’. The judges said: ‘It has opened a café, expanded its children’s section and revamped its website to include the introduction of online purchasing. Its extensive events programme is now brought to people around the world via video and audio podcasts.’

The LBF International Excellence Awards were presented on 14 March at the beginning of the London Book Fair. The awards were presented in 16 categories, including international publishing, academic and scholarly publishing, children’s publishing, literary translation and digital innovation.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, CSIRO Publishing was shortlisted for the Academic and Professional Publisher Award, which went to OECD Publishing from France.
