Scholastic acquires Minchin’s ‘Matilda’ picture book

Scholastic has acquired world rights to a picture book by Australian musician and comedian Tim Minchin, based on Minchin’s lyrics to the musical Matilda.

The book will take the lyrics from the song ‘When I Grow Up’, which imagines what adulthood is like from a child’s perspective. British illustrator Steve Antony will illustrate the title.

In a statement on his website, Minchin said, ‘I feel incredibly lucky to be able to lend my lyrics to a children’s book. I adore Steve’s work, and it’s been a thrill to watch him develop his gorgeous illustrations. I can’t wait to hold a copy in my hands.’

World rights were sold by Michael Lynch of Smartartists Management to Andrew Berkhut for Scholastic Australia, Ken Geist for Scholastic US and Samantha Smith for Scholastic UK.

The book is scheduled for publication in the Australia and the UK in October.
