Puffin to publish Yousafzai’s first picture book
Puffin is releasing a picture book by Pakistani activist and the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Malala Yousafzai, reports the Bookseller.
Malala’s Magic Pencil will be Puffin UK’s lead title in Autumn, and is aimed at children aged four to seven years old. The book tells the story of the author’s dreams for a magic pencil that helps make the world a better place. Sebastien Cosset and Marie Pommepuy, better known as Kerascoët, will illustrate the book.
Yousafza said she hopes the book will ‘inspire’ children to believe their voices can make a difference.
Penguin Random House Children’s UK MD Francesca Dow described the book as ‘very special … with a vital message for children—that words are powerful and that the smallest act can make a big difference.’
Puffin acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to the book from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in the US.
A picture book based on Yousafzai’s life, Malala, a Brave Girl from Pakistan (Jeanette Winter), was published by Simon and Schuster in 2014, but Malala’s Magic Pencil will be the author’s first picture book.
