Griffiths wins 2017 Ernest Scott Prize

Tom Griffiths has won the 2017 Ernest Scott Prize for history for The Art of Time Travel: Historians and Their Craft (Black Inc.).

Griffiths’ book was chosen from a shortlist of four, which included: A History of New Zealand Women (Barbara Brookes, Bridget Williams Books); Settler Colonialism and (Re)conciliation: Frontier Violence, Affective Performances, and Imaginative Refoundings (Penelope Edmonds, Palgrave Macmillan); and Paved with Good Intentions: Terra Nullius, Aboriginal Land Rights and Settler-Colonial Law (Hannah Robert, Halstead Press).

The judges described Griffiths’ exploration of Australia’s historical tradition as a ‘wonderful meditation for historians’, ‘a beautifully written homage to the craft of writing history as a discipline and a passion’ and ‘a journey that tells us much about Australian historians and their craft’.

The $13,000 prize is awarded annually to a work based on original research that contributes to the history of Australia or New Zealand or to the history of colonisation. The prize is presented by the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts, in conjunction with the Australian Historical Association. For more information, click here.
